Culture-as-explicit

Culture is defined as explicit as well as implicit patterns of traditionally derived and chosen ideas and their manifestations in practices, artifacts and institutions; cultural patterns are therefore considered an outcome of action and conditioning fundamentals of further action.

From this definition we understand culture is not mere group membership, but it is the patterned worlds associated with group membership.

There are three various characteristics associated with a definition culture as explicit. Some of the noteworthy features include material, religion and politics. Culture is therefore not limited to explicit, defined value orientations and ideological customs generally defined by people discussing culture. Besides, culture also involves implicit, spread associations as well as affordances embedded in various aspects of day by day life.

Culture varies transversely across theoretical perspectives and academic disciplines. In psychology, there is a predisposition to define culture as the traditional beliefs, customs, values, and the norms of any typical ethnic group. This description however is awkward in that it equates culture with a group, which is not the case always.

The society you have been brought up in since childhood has instilled in you culturally definite pattern of belief systems, traditions and behavior which sets aside your society from the rest.. Simply put, culture is around us all, rooted into the most basic essentials of our daily lives. The implicit cultural facets are universals present in each and every community as a common trait – which are the most obvious aspects of human being.

The universals are the collective knowledge, instilled in us as part of our physiological and biological mechanisms for how we congregate information about the world within us, while responding through the cultural products and artifacts we create. The explicit aspects of culture are found when you go deeper under the universals of culture to see how particular sub cultures define themselves in accordance to the world; these may be inherently exceptional to your society, and this makes them stand out from the larger cultural universals.
